The near car is a 1954 Kurtis 500KK chassis with Byers fiberglass body and 54 DeSoto Hemi V8 for power and was built originally in LA (4800cc <291 Cu In>, 2400 lbs, c.275 HP, 4 drum brakes). The other car is a '62 Dolphin Abarth (900cc, 950 lbs, 100HP, 2 disc, 2 drum) that was originally built in San Diego. The Abarth motor is FIAT based. This car has won the Ken Miles Award at the Monterey Historics. I will see what I can do about other photos, I'm not very Computer savvy. Thanks for asking. Yes, I am very fortunate to have these cars and I realize it! My son has a '59 Abarth Allemano Spyder and I stole his spare motor for my Dolphin.
Hi Dennis,
the hooks you speak of are the hood latches. You pull back and twist on each one and they release the hood. Then, you must lift the hood forward, up and away from firewall.
In response to your question about Thunderhill,no, I'm working the AMA races at Infineon, that weekend. Will you be at the Ferrari Challenge at Infineon, this weekend? I'll be working as a corner worker on Sat.
Bob DuBois
Unfortunately, we never know what corner we are working till our meeting on the morning of each day.
Our meetings are in the Fan Care building under the main grandstand 45 minutes before the track goes hot. If you're around, then, I could meet you & let you know where I'll be. Otherwise, just look for a blue Mitsubishi Galant parked at one of the corner worker stands. That'll be me.
Bob.
what can I say about those Bentley's? The red one is a 24 litre Napier- Bentley. The engine is from an airplane!! The other two, well god only knows what was in their coffee when they were drawing up the plans. Actually, you could say that about all three. These images were taken at Silverstone during the Bentley drivers Club meeting held in August. There is a special race for 'modified' Bentleys.
Unfortunately, my wife's health precludes me attending any other races other than those I work @ Infineon(about 1 per week), plus one day of the Pro events, when I work as a volunteer with the Track Ambassador group. We do get down to Monterey for some of the activities during Concours week. But, that's about the extent of my race activities.
I may try to make the Marin Concours. Wil have to see how things go this week. If it looks like I'll make it,I'll let you know & we can plan to meet up
Looks like a pretty good chance I'll be at the Marin Concours. So, if you see an older gentleman wearing a black Flying Lizards baseball cap, and pushing his wife in a wheelchair, that's probably me.
Dennis,
Once again, we missed! We didn't get there till almost noon. Like you,the heat got to my wife, so I parked her in the shade & made a brisk walk around the field, and,at least, glanced at all the cars. Only got a few pix, myself.
I am working as a turn worker on Fri. of the WCC. As usual, don't know where I'll be till that morning. Just look for my blue Mitsu Galant at one of the flag stations, unless they bus us out to the turns & make us park out in lot 15. Sun. I'll be workng as a Track Ambassador somewhere on the grounds, usually in one of the corporate tents. Someday, we'll make contact!!
Just read your profile on your other website. Got a kick out of your description of hanging over the fence in the rain at Stockton. I was one of those very wet flagmen at turn 1 at Stockton who had to help all those poor souls who slid off the track into the mud & had to be pushed back onto the track. A very busy day! Don't think I ever got as wet as that Sunday!!Incidentally, there is a photo of a bunch of us "rescuing" one of the stuck cars in an old issue of "Sports Car Pictorial". Do you remember that magazine? I still have a couple dozen issues, plus race programs for about 6 years of Stockton road races-Bob D
Dennis,
I got the easy part of your request done. Here is the info you requested. Now comes the hard part. I'm not the most computer-literate guy on the planet. I know I can scan the covers into my computer. The hard part is then finding them, and figuring out how to transfer them to this website. If all else fails, I'll make photocopies & just send them to you by snail mail.
The first Stockton road race program to list Edgar's 4.9 Ferrari being driven by Shelby is 1957. The Huffaker-Knoop Special is first listed in the 1958 program, but a program note says it's initial appearance was at Laguna Seca in 1957,which I confirmed with the 1957 Laguna Seca race program. Kjell Kvale's Lister-Jag was more of a problem. I found no listing in any program for a Lister-Jag owned by Kjell in any Stockton program,1956-1962, or in any other norcal race program in that period. The 1959 Stockton program does have a Lister-Jag #66 being driven by Jack Flaherty. That's the first Lister-Jag entry I could find in any race program. Hope this helps you out. Will let you know if I have success with the program covers.-Bob
Hey Dennis...I'll see you at the Wine Country Classics! Check it out...I just scored a set of over 100 original 8 x 10 Indy 500 photos on eBay. Some guy tried to snipe me at the end but didn't pony up a high enough bid...HAH! I'll be sure to share these with my friends here at the VRL!
Dennis, Great to make your aquaintance and very impressed with your portfolio. If you are ever in the UK let me know. I used to travel to SF once a year but have not done so for some years now. One of my favorite cities in the US. Glad you enjoyed my photos, the racing ones mainly taken by professionals.
Kind regards
Conor
Hi Dennis

Thanks for the comments about my Monterey pictures. I'd still be there taking pictures if I had my wish. One of these days I'll even go somewhere other than the corkscrew... Maybe.
I went to your website and you have some amazing work there. Thanks for sharing your work with your fellow car nuts.
Be seeing you.D~
Thanks Dennis! I'm sorry I couldn't get back to you last weekend... I was seriously ."done in" on Sunday PM. It was a weird weekend. My daughter and son in law had to leave town Saturday to attend his mother's funeral. She died suddenly on Thursday. I spent an evening with Bob Kovaleski and friend. On Sunday Bob inducted me into the PRDA... a dubious honor to be sure... but an honor none the less. I'll try to catch up with you next time I'm down there.
Many thanks for the picture of my Lola T 70 at the Monterey Historics. I also enjoyed your web site. That picture of the McLaren M8A had to have been from 1969 or 1970. What event was that?
Dennis - Just finished reading your "Look into the Eyes" story in Sports Car Digest. Loved the artical and those photos - WELL DONE! I'll be leaving a note with Sports Car Digest as well.
Dennis;
I am sure you have been told a MILLION times what great photography you have created.
Bob Lee is a good friend #6 Mclaren M6 and owned the #5 Hulme M20 for years. I need to post some of the other photos I have with Denny in the #5 car at Laguna 1987. Need to post credits to proper photographer as well. Thanks for the invitation on VRI.
All the best, Don
Dennis-We got our turn assignments for the 24 hours of LeMons, early. I'll be at turn 8(by the drag strip return road-not to be confused with 8A,which is further down the esses),on both days. If you're in the area, stop by & say "hello".--Bob DuBois
Dennis, Beautiful portfolio!
Yes a nice green and cool weekend at Thunderhill.
We unfortunately could not stay for the Sunday races.
I'll be at Sears Point next week,
What is the next event you are going to attend?
Many congratulations on your many photographs in the Vintage Racecar Special Edition Photography, they are truly excellent. I hope they give you some sort of prize for that. Keep up the great work. Kind regards, Conor
Great interview with Bruce. His shop is around the corner from where I work. It is hard not to visit every day and see the cars in the showroom. Besides the fact we supply some parts for his projects. Thanks Dennis.
Thanks for the compliment - I love open wheel cars of just about any era and will continue to collect and bring them to Monterey and other events. My only problem is that I live in Boston (where we have 16 inches of snow at the moment) and hence am seasonally restricted as to what i can do.
Paul E. Hubert
I'll be adding a link to your site as well.
