The Alfa Romeo Owners Club-USA (AROC-USA) is all about experiencing your Alfa, sharing the experience and having fun.  You don't have to be a mechanical genius, or drive like Fangio.   All you need is an appreciation of driving a passionately designed Alfa Romeo.  If this is your first time visiting AROC-USA.org, you can access any of our sections by clicking on the links at the top of any page.   Use our discussion forums, post images in the galleries, find a local chapter near you and join the fun by becoming a member today!

Hello, new comer from Tokyo, Japan.

Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii. I am running a 1986 Alfa Romeo GTV6 in SCCA Solo II competition on the Big Island now. It's set up for Alfa Romeo Owners Club time trials and SCCA Solo I Time Trials & Solo II autocrossing . It's also ready for road racing or other competition when it becomes available on the island. I have a 1979 Alfa Spider Veloce I drive on the open road and a 1978 Alfa Spider Veloce autocross car project in restoration. I am current looking for a spare Alfa Spider 2000cc twin cam motor and transmission for the 1979 spider in good rebuildable or usable as-is condition for the road car so I don't have to take it off the street. Any help in locating a spare engine & trans is helpful. Email me or leave msg on Business Cell 808-895-1400.

Although my race car is a Fiat, I have an '84 Alfa Spider Veloce that I drive one in a while. Could someone tell me how to get the ignition switch out of the steering column? We've traced an electrical problem (we think) to a faulty switch.
  • Vernon Lowe

I have a 1930, 1750 6C Blown Zagato,I'm ashamed to say I don't run it as often as it deserves, after bringing it over from the UK when we emigrated to USA I seem to keep finding other car projects to occupy my time.
Joining your list will hopefully rekindle my enthusiasm for my Alfa

Back from the Copperstate1000 and have been doing features on the race all week.
They were some very nice Alfas including GTA's and a SS which we featured today.

Very nice! I have often kicked myself that I passed up an SS back in the late 1960's because someone had installed air conditioning! I was so put off that I never even asked the price plus I was driving a Sprint Veloce at the time and was happy with it.

We have driven a total of 3250 miles without a cross word, in spite of spending over 45 hours confined within the small and noisy cockpit of a 13 year old Alfa Romeo Spider. Now we are relaxing and editing the 2000 photographs we took of the cars and accompanying spectators in the Mille Miglia regulation rally.
We crossed 8 countries, drove round more than 100 hairpin bends in the Alps, rose to 8600 feet above sea level. The objective of the trip was to raise funds for Vila Maninga in Mozambique. So far £525 has been raised.
Now that we have the photographs, the story of the trip, and the feel of the incredible aura of the rally itself, we will happily make a fully illustrated presentation to any group or club in return for a donation to the charity.
The day of the rally dawned with sunshine and a relaxed start. The next part of the day took me completely by surprise. The atmosphere defies words, you could say there was electricity in the air, or that there is magnetism about it, or that it has an aura of its own. But none of these justly describe the feel of the event. Every tiny lay-by, every bit of gravel, every flat grass verge along the road is occupied. Barbecues, picnics, merrymaking at every turn. Every car that passes blows its horn the drivers wave and shout. Just being there was extraordinary, a 5 day party 1000 miles long. The finale in Tuscany was such good fun that we are thinking of doing it again next year, this time as a group trip involving other classic car enthusiasts [contact me if you would like to join us].
See some of our pictures at http://www.flickr.com/photos/bob_debell/ . More will follow. If you enjoy the pictures, please make a donation at http://www.justgiving.com/robertdebell . Bob Debell.

After nearly 12 months of waiting for another Alfa enthusiast to start a dialogue I guess I need to take the initiative, my Alfa is probably my most valuable car but my least used and in many ways emotionally neglected vehicle, My other cars are frequently exercised and I regularly meet other "kindred spirits" with Ginetta's, Healey's and Lotus cars, on the few occasions that I've exercised the 6C its admired as a "Old MG" or "Kit Car" What do we need to do here in the South to share our pleasures with other auto enthusiasts?
  • Henry (Hank) Baumann

    Hi Vernon,
I don,t know about the south but here in Wisconsin, enthusiasts are very few and far between. I had some great experiences in the early 90,s with a german friend who owned a Mille Miglia Alfa. Luckily, we were in Italy so most people we spoke with had an idea on what it was. Wisconsin is fortunate to have a reasonable and quite excellent shop in Appleton called Motion Products. I have seen some interesting older Alfas there and some incredible work as well Keep in touch! Hank

My cars are a huge source of pleasure and contact for new friends and acquaintances in my new home in USA. When I emigrated from the UK in the 90's I thought my common european cars would be easily recognized but I guess in the USA the 6C Alfa is more a "Pebble Beach" type car than one to use and exercise. Having spent 6 years restoring I guess my need to drive and experience the outstanding handling of a 79 year old sportscar overcomes the instinctive tendancy to treat the car as (the americans say) a trailer queen.
Having taken 15 years to secure US citizenship I have on occasions considered transfering my allegencies to a US vintage car but am at a loss to find a comparable handling and astheticaly perfect alternative to the 6C. Any ideas?
  • Bob Debell

My Alfa Spider is only a 1997 model, so not that old. When I park in any village in Italy, and fairly often even in the UK, people stop to chat. Usually the older generation. I am organising a group run to the Mille Miglia from Dover, England in May 2010. Have a look at http://www.1001miles.co.uk for details. Bob.

The pre-war Alfa's are so expensive at this point no one ever sees the 'real-thing' even on display, let alone actually being driven. The Alfa Owners Club National convention was held in Chicago last year, easily within distance of several pre-war cars owned and garaged in the area and not one of them either entered or showed up for the Concours. It seems that if it's not Monterey or Detroit it's not worth the trouble. Similarly, but on another level, at Elkhart Lake Wisconsin, at the Kohler International Challenge, it became painfully obvious with the Ford GT40 owners that due to the stratospheric value of the cars none would participate at speed on the track. So, it appears that no one will blame you for keeping that 6C at home...just invite some of us to visit now and then and we'll ogle it over a glass of Pimm's Cup!
  • Norm Sippel

    Vernon, et al.

You say you're in the South. But, don't mention where.

The Florida Alfa Club had its annual picnic and car show at Ft. DeSoto Park (Best beach in US) yesterday. Not a lot of cars, but some nice Alfas Lancias & Fiats.

Some of us been trying to encourage Bill Warner to have a special display at Amelia 2010 in honor of Alfa's 100th anniversary. But, nothing yet. If Alfa becomes a featured marque, many of us will bring our Alfas to the area to support it.

I'm not a concourse bloke, my car leaks oil, has an SU substituted for the Mimini and every time I drive it I'm Nuvolari. I live near Knoxville TN, its a fabulous place, hopefully the last place to have socialism imposed upon it, having lived in UK for 40 years I came here as a radical capitalist and despite the current trends, I'm hopeful my fellow Americans won't fail me.
  • Norm Sippel

    Vernon:

I'll pass your location on to one of our FAC members who gets up your way occasionally. He spends a lot of time near Boone, NC.

Our show yesterday wasn't for Concours cars. Just daily drivers.

As for "socialism," we have a LONG way to go before we get like Europe. But, then again, some of that is a good thing.
  • KLHarper

Hi Vernon, Our local alfa club puts on a 500 mile (Cinquecento mille) driving trip in the NC mountains. Usual areas that we visit are Asheville/Highlands/dealsgap. We would love to see you on the drive. I can send you more info if you are interested.

    Vernon and all,

Don't forget to plan and come to the 100th anniversary of ALFA celebration, which is going to take place in late June, 2010 in Frederick, MD. I am the convention chairman and we are going to have an historic Alfa racecar demonstration at Summit Point in nearby WV, as well as a great Concorso of historic Alfas at a beautiful setting in the nearby countryside.

Details can be found at the AROC Capital Chapter's website at www.alfaromeonews.com, in the Alfa Owner Magazine, online at the Alfa Bulletin Board at www.alfabb.com, or via the Alfa Romeo Owners Club website at www.aroc-usa.com.

We'd love to see your car at the convention, Vernon! Contact me anytime at alfacentury2010@gmail.com. I'll post details on the convention schedule here soon.

    Cheers,
