Circuits 2011 is Dennis Gray’s initial foray into EBook publishing. The book features the author’s favorite images from three major 2011 west coast vintage racing events along with a look at 2010 and smaller 2011 events.
The first chapter includes eighteen images from Rennsport Reunion IV. Gray’s camera captures everything from dicing 917s as they plunge into Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway’s Turn 9 to an early 356 Abarth about to make the dive into the track’s famed Corkscrew. There are mood setting shots of Porsches in the morning fog, close-ups of drivers, mechanics and details of historic Porsche race cars.
Chapter two looks back at the August Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion and opens with a pair of classic D Type Jaguars at the entry to the Corkscrew. The initial image is followed by a series including Formula 1 cars, Cobras, Ferraris and Bugattis attacking the same turn. Gray’s camera captures the wide-variety of vintage racers attending the weekend event from an early morning shot of Jon Shirley’s Alfa Romeo P3 entering Turn 11 to a C Type Jaguar in a foggy paddock.
The Sonoma Motorsport Festival is the subject of the third chapter. Can-Am and F-1 McLarens are featured along with a rare Dan Gurney AAR Eagle F-1. There are details shots and on track and paddock shots in the rain.
The last chapter includes photographs from other 2010, 2011 events and his earlier work. There are Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and driver close-ups. The on-track photographs include a Hudson Hornet, F5000 Lola, Can Am cars and Bugattis. The book ends with a rear view of three Bugattis descending through the Cork Screw at Laguna Seca.
It's like being in the pits at the track, great shots of vintage race cars, perfect for aficionados. Love the detail shots!
