Alex signs with Fortec Motorsport

GILL TO CHALLENGE FOR PROTYRE FORMULA RENAULT TITLE WITH FORTEC

Fortec Motorsport has today, Friday, 7^th March, confirmed talented British youngster Alex Gill as the team’s first signing for the 2014 Protyre Formula Renault Championship, with confidence justifiably high of mounting a consistent challenge for the coveted title.

Gill, a podium finisher in the ultra-competitive category during last November’s Autumn Cup, will embark on his first full season in cars this year with the Daventry team and the 16-year-old is aiming to fight at the sharp end from the very first round of the campaign.

After winning the 2009 Super 1 Cadet Karting Championship and then adding the hotly-contested MSA British KF3 Karting title in 2012, the Doncaster youngster focused on educational commitments last year before arriving in Protyre Formula Renault for the final two rounds of the main season.

Going on to take two podiums from three races in the Autumn Cup, with a best result of second place, Gill firmly established himself as one of the UK’s top young single-seater prospects and the Red Bull Racing affiliated driver will undoubtedly be a major threat this season.

“This is a fantastic opportunity”, said Gill, “I’ve watched good friends from karting move on to great success with Fortec. Year after year, Fortec win races and championships and the testing we have done together has gone really well.

“With the team’s knowledge and resources, I’m sure we can do a great job together. I hope I can prove myself as a valued member of the Fortec family and move up through the various formulae with them.”

Dominic Stott, Fortec’s newly appointed Protyre Formula Renault team manager, is delighted to have secured Gill’s signature for the 2014 campaign and is confident of mounting a major challenge for the championship crown.

“Alex is one of the best young drivers coming through and will definitely be one of the favourites for the Protyre Formula Renault title this season”, he commented, “It’s been very important to Fortec to sign Alex and we’ll be working hard to sign another team-mate very soon.

“Fortec is still the team all the others want to beat, so our job is to go out and win. The Protyre championship is very important to the team as it’s where we start working with young drivers who progress onto higher formulae.”

While Stott will head-up Fortec’s Protyre Formula Renault operation this season, his predecessor Dan Mitchell – who is working with the squad’s Formula 3 team this year – will remain involved as chief engineer.

Rockingham International Super Sportscar Circuit will host the first three rounds of the Protyre Formula Renault season on 5^th/6^th April. Before then, the Northamptonshire venue will host the official pre-season test and Media Day on Wednesday, 19^th March.
