James F. Kaserman is a retired educator and businessman and served in elected public office for more than ten years. Following graduation from Washington High School in Massillon, Ohio, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Kent State University and a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Dayton. He was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant from the United States Army. He is a former professional race car driver and still drives stock cars with the Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association, winning the 2007 championship.
Kaserman has been a newspaper columnist and served as a teacher, coach, and administrator for thirty-six years in both Ohio and Florida before retiring in 2005.
What car(s) do you own?
1951 Ford Convertible, this stock car allegedly began its’ racing career in the then popular NASCAR Convertible Division, which raced between 1951 and 1958 on the old Beach Course at Daytona Beach, Florida. A “Sun liner” hardtop was added to promote the forthcoming “hardtop” and this car participated in exhibition races at county fairs and Joey Chitwood-type Thrill Shows. After competing nationally, old 21 was racing the short tracks throughout the Southeastern United States.
The original engine was a 312 cubic inch Ford Flathead V8. Some songs of the day called this engine a “hot rod Lincoln.”
During the short track days, a 300 cubic inch Ford Truck Engine, also called a “straight six”, replaced the Flathead V8.
This car won the 2007 Daytona Antique Automobile Racing Southern Vintage Series, with a V8 Ford replacing the old straight 6 engine. Today, after 57 years of racing, old 21 continues to race throughout the state of Florida!
