The factory Ferrari 512S of Nino Vaccarella and Ignazio Giunti lead the Porsche 917K of Brian Redman and Jo Siffert out of turn three on the old 3.81 mile course. The Ferrari failed to finish and the Porsche almost didn't. Late in the race the #1 Porsche blew a clutch. Initially they decided to retire the car and Brian Redman was transferred to the #2 Gulf 917. A Porsche engineer commented they could change the clutch and a snap decision was made to do so. The car was wheeled back to the pit box and mechanics went quickly to the task of changing the clutch. They did and Jo Siffert took the car back into the race in fourth place. He even shocked his co-driver Brian Redman by passing him as Brian was driving the other team car. Redman was then reassigned back to his original ride and ended the race getting credit for driving the second place and first place winners.
