Pedro Rodriguez and Jackie Oliver won the Daytona 24 in 1971 driving this Gulf Porsche 917K. This was the second win in a row at Daytona for Rodriguez. They thought it would be easy considering how they trounced the Ferrari 512 in 1970 but with a huge lead at the end of the race their transmission crapped out on them. They had to rebuild it and did so in 90 minutes. However, they lost the lead by a small margin to the Ferrari 512 of Tony Adamowicz and Ronnie Bucknum. Only the determined driving of Rodriguez allowed them to recapture the lead and win the race. Tragically Rodriguez would die five months later in Germany while driving a Ferrari 512M in an Interserie sports car race.
