Infineon Raceway

Infineon Raceway celebrated 40 years of racing during the 2008 Big O Tires Racing Season, as the Sonoma Valley facility once again hosted the most diverse racing schedule in the country. Located just 30 minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the 1,600-acre facility serves as the gateway to the beautiful Sonoma Wine Country.

Highlighted by the 20th consecutive visit by the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the raceway hosted seven major events in 2008, including the AMA Superbike Series, the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series and the IndyCar® Series. The raceway also celebrated its 40th anniversary with a variety of exciting elements.

In addition to its slate of major events, Infineon Raceway is a year-round motorsports complex with events scheduled 340 days and 50 weekends a year. More than 500,000 fans pass through the gates during each season.

Comment by John Cardinale on March 11, 2009 at 10:26am: For IndyCar wekeend, we will have the Historic Formula One cars, same as last year. We'll also have Indy LIghts, but just one race and not two. Indy Lights will race on Sunday. Becasue of a conflict with the Grand Am sked, they will not be here, which is too bad. I really liked the sports cars. Working on finding something else right now. In terms of Infineon, our contract with them expires in 2012 some time. Without that company, we wouldn't have been able to turn this place into a premier facility. After 2012, who knows???

Was it Indy Lights that I heard were coming to Infineon,this year? It seems to me I read some kind of announcement of an open wheel series appearing at the track,this year.

Comment by Bob DuBois on March 10, 2009 at 5:47pm: I have a question that can probably be answered by John Cardinale.Lately, I have noticed less advertising around the track for Infineon. Has their sponsorship agreement ended with the track? And, if so, does that mean there's a chance that the Sears Point name might creep back into the official name for the track? I realize that the infusion of money from Infineon did wonders for improving the track and all it's facilities. It truly is one of the best permanent road courses in the country,now. However, it didn't do much for track identity. There are still an awful lot of bay area residents who say,"huh?" when you say " Infineon Raceway". But, as soon as you say,"the old Sears Point track", they immediately know what you're talking about.
I think Laguna Seca got it right. Mazda got their name up front, but you know immediately where Mazda Raceway is when they added "at Laguna Seca".
In answer to Scott Smith's query about open wheel racers at Infineon, aren't the historic formula 1 cars on the undercard for IRL,this year?

Actually, get ready because the Wed Night Drags start this Wednesday. As far as WCC, I do not believe the open-wheel cars are on the docket for 2009. Should be a real good show, though. The Morgan wasn't the most impressive race car ever built but still cool that it's celebrating 100 years.

Comment by Pat Kaye on March 9, 2009 at 9:22pm: Yeah, I know now, but the point in time I was talking about was the early 1970's! Roche didn't exist and there were only a few farmers out there. The area south of the track hadn't been developed.
Actually, some of the complaints came from the neighborhood where I now live in Novato. We're on the east side of the hills adjacent to the Petaluma River. When the Wednesday Night Drags are going on you'd swear there was some crazy guy out in a hot boat in the river in the dark!

If it's anything like the last couple of years the Ferrari Historic Challange May 1-3rd will have a wonderful selection of Masearti pre war and Alfa Pre war open wheel cars along with early 50s. I have been told two Masearti 250Fs will be there. May 16-15th F5000 will be at Thunder Hill. Wine Country usually has a selection of F-1, F-A, and F-B running.
