In 1979 BMW created the ProCar series to run as a support event to Formula 1 races. They utilized their M1 sports car especially modified for racing. This included a complete roll cage, 470 HP racing engine as opposed to the 277 HP production version, Campagnolo wheels, Lexan windows and a racing brake system.
