I run a 1958 Morgan +4 in vintage events in the mid-west. I bought the car in 1963 from Grand Prix Motors on Lake street in Minneapolis. This establishment was owned by Dewey Brohaugh and the Morgan was on consignment from Tom Kennedy, who purchased it new and ran it in SCCA events. In June 1963 I attended an SCCA driver's school, after fabricating a bolt-in roll bar, a straight pipe and a windscreen. Those were times when one drove to the races, bolted in the roll bar, removed the muffler and wind shield, and ran. My first June Sprints was in 1967, and I ran the inaugural event at BIR (DonnyBrooke) in 1968. SCCA had been relaxing the rules, and "competitive" equated to "very expensive" and so I retired. Finally graduating from school in 1970, I got back into it briefly in 1972-73, and then retired again. When the VSCR club was formed in 1976, I joined and again ran the Morgan until 1984, when I started running the Peyote (Triumph) special. I purchased it as a basket case in 1982 and started a major redesign/re-engineering exercise and transformed it into a relatively fast vintage racer. I ran it in the mid-west until 1989, when it was sold to Baxter Culver of Sacramento, Ca, and then to Bill Babcock of Oregon, who finely tuned the suspension and motor, and it is now a really fast vintage racer. I built a new engine for the Morgan in 1991, and again started running vintage events. After the 1998 season, I became swamped with work ( Advising the Univ. of Minnesota Solar Vehicle Project and Formula SAE Project, which included raising all the needed funding), and decided to redo the Morgan roll bar. One thing led to another, and soon the body was off, time passed, and the todo list became immense. In early 2004, the VSCDA club announced that their Fall Vintage Festival was featuring Morgans, so I began a serious effort to put it back together. We made that event, and have been running a couple events a year since then. I began this activity as a graduate student, doing most of the work myself, and always short of cash, and it is still hard for me to write big checks. So, the Morgan evolves a bit each year (this year its getting an Accusump), and the body never gets attention. I have been told that the body exhibits "patina" which is in keeping with its history.
